Diana Rigg, who proves that the old scripts hold up well in The Avengers, has been watching and remembering.
"It is rather like looking at an old photograph," she says. "It has often been rumoured that I never like to be reminded of The Avengers, but the truth is I am eternally grateful to the series. It put me on the map in a way that 15 years of playing in the theatre would not have done."
Yet one thing it did not give Diana was financial security. "Every so often my agent mutters something about repeat fees and a very modest cheque arrives," she says. "Had we enjoyed such a success in America, we could have all bought ourselves houses next to the Pacific."
Diana is soon to be seen in Bleak House on BBC TV: "I have been looking for the right part to bring me back to television, and I think this is it," she said.
