Dame Diana Plays New Kind Of Role

Former Avengers star Dame Diana Rigg has been installed as chancellor of Stirling University.

In a ceremony at Stirling's Holy Rood Church she became the fourth chancellor and the first woman to hold the position in the university's 31-year history.

More than 300 guests including local dignitaries and representatives from other Scottish universities watched the installation of the actress, who shot to fame in the 1960s for her role as karate-kicking Emma Peel in the cult TV show.

Speaking during the ceremony, Dame Diana, 60, who lives in Stirling, said that 10 years ago when she attended a previous ceremony it was beyond her "wildest imaginings" that she would ever find herself in the same position.

She said "The academic world is a far cry from that of a thespian, although both have a lot of learning to do."
